During the last ten years many things have changed such as cultural, economic, and politic. We spoke with designers and architects nationwide to see what recent events have shaped the exterior design of residential buildings and see what design trends and ideas are here to stay.

An extremely important points we get are the study of architectural history is a way of evaluating cultural beliefs and values. This is our philosophical take on things. You can understand and look at a building, there really is a shift going on over the last two generations from the post-war [period] and that it is a reflection of society’s values. For examples: the ostentatious McMansions of the ’80s and ’90s, the small, affordable, modest homes of the ’50s and ’60s, and the evolution of the home in the last couple of decades.

It cannot be denied that the recession has hit many countries hard and has had many effects, including job loss, slowed development, and simpler design so the current American homes are ‘smaller, simpler, and low-maintenance. Actually, simpler designs are becoming more appealing because harkening back to a more family-centered, stay-at-home lifestyle. Their house is a reflection of who they are, so less materials and simpler designs seems to be a better expression of how we live and where we are in this economy. Smaller is just more energy-efficient, more economical, easier to maintain, and practical. When money is tight, low-maintenance becomes important, like the old adage goes, “time is money”.

Currently, there is a tendency of many people building a smaller house, we think the economy factor might be part of it, and what we think would most appealing was that they like the detailing, dan they don’t really need big spaces, but customize the house to them. We think many people creating just the spaces they need rather than the spaces they think they need for resale and they are thinking more about how they are living in their house. And presently also has occurred a rise in the interest in more contemporary houses with cleaner lines and less ornate detailing on the exterior.

Of course, the simplicity of the home is results from a variety of factors. Smaller homes are continuation of the sustainable design we’ve seen over the course of the last few years as well as smaller homes encourage energy efficiency in terms of cost savings. However, it seems, that Americans are focusing less on stuff and more on quality and are certainly getting the most bang for their buck.

Comes a slowing of new development along with economic struggle. As a result, rather than building new home or moving, people are investing more in their current homes. One result, is that remodeling is on the rise. Rather than spending a lot of money on a new addition, people that still want to make improvements on their homes want to remodel, because the economy has greatly affected what their do, so they’re not spending as much money on major remodels, but smaller ones — like kitchen remodels. It would seem that, they are build homes suited to their needs and people are trying to be more contented with what they have.

When it comes to these improvements, we see homeowners, too, thinking in the long term. Many people trying to make very rational decisions, we see them willing to pay a premium if they know that something is going to be easy to maintain, more efficient, and have a longer lifecycle, but we also see people putting money into their house. It seems as though many people are getting much more aware of that decision-making, as they are more efficient, but at the same time more practical, and get the most for their money.

We have also viewed a big shift toward region- and climate-specific design elements making their way into exteriors, especially in hot humid climates, one trend that we’re seeing, is a lot of advancement in building systems, buildings are transforming to identify different climatic situations, and designing according to these differences. How you incorporate your system together is very crucial, focusing on the region.

The sophistication and growth of outdoor living space are one of the key trends we can see in residential exteriors. The design of houses is progressively becoming more tied to the land, including landscaping that combines native plants and space for appreciating the surrounding scenery. Many people are creating multiple outdoor spaces, the outside of the house is expanding, porches, outdoor terraces are becoming larger. We think the outdoor space is growing because of less expensive space to create and because the houses are shrinking. We continue to see full-size kitchens, or if not outdoor kitchens, a designated roasting area with counter space dedicated to the roasting process.

One of the great way to provide transition between the inside and the outside to connecting the interior of a home with its natural setting is backyard entertaining areas, while the exterior space design in the front yard is expanding or rather devolving into a connection between the public and private. We are seeing an increased interest in the porch, this shows the rise in popularity of the front porch. Having a front door in a suburban context or just a very small front porch, it is better rather than a front door you are turning your back to the neighborhood. With a real porch, you can just look to the right or the left. It’s great. There’s something mystical about it and there’s just a romanticism about the porch.

With regards to the exterior of residential buildings, the hundreds of trends are taking place. An increasing interest and technology have driven a wealth of implementation, research, and demand for green materials and energy efficiency, so there’s no reason to ignore the other influential values that permeate architecture and design.
